ASH undertook environmental studies for the Strath Halladale to Dallangwell overhead line
ASH was commissioned by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission plc (SHE Transmission) to undertake and co-ordinate environmental studies for an overhead line connection between the consented Strathy North Wind Farm and the National Grid.
Key Tasks
Route options appraisal
Screening and Scoping
EIA coordination and project management
Landscape and visual impact assessment
Stakeholder consultation
Environmental monitoring during construction
What we did
Consent for construction of the proposed overhead line was sought by way of an application to the Scottish Ministers under section 37 of the Electricity Act (1989). Following a screening request, it was determined that the project was not considered ‘EIA Development’. Nevertheless, an Environmental Appraisal was carried out to identify any potentially significant impacts on the environment.
As part of the design development process, a number of design and route options were explored by ASH and SHE Transmission to identify a route which is technically and economically feasible whilst minimising potential environmental impacts. The focus of this approach was to avoid a number of environmentally designated sites within the vicinity of the development.
ASH project managed a team of specialist consultants to undertake ecological, ornithological, hydrological and archaeological surveys and assessments, and was responsible for the landscape and visual impact assessment of the proposed overhead line.
An application for the connection was submitted to Scottish Ministers in September 2013, accompanied by the Environmental Appraisal prepared by ASH. Construction of the overhead line commenced in 2014 and was completed in 2015.
