ASH investigated site options for the new Knocknagael substation to support a transmission line upgrade
ASH was appointed by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission plc (SHE Transmission) to investigate site options for a new substation at Knocknagael at the junction of the Beauly- Blackhillock line and the Foyers “T”, necessitated by a line upgrade.

What we did
Issues considered to inform the preferred substation site option included landscape, visual, ecology, noise and cultural heritage. Once the preferred option was selected, a landscape and visual assessment was carried out as part of an EIA, supported by ouline landscape mitigation proposals and photomontages of the proposals from key viewpoints.
The substation as now constructed is located within undulating countryside near the top of the slope above the River Ness valley approximately 6.5 km from the centre of Inverness. The site is screened to the north by a block of mixed woodland and scrub and by topography in other directions, especially to the south and west.
The substation consists of a fenced enclosure with switching circuits, two transformers and a control building on two adjoining stepped platforms cut into the landscape, largely within an existing localised hollow.
